Vitens Evides International
Plan International and Vitens Evides International (VEI) work together in the field of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Plan International and VEI are each involved in their own way in improving the living conditions of the world’s poorest people.
VEI and Plan International
With its knowledge from the Dutch drinking water sector, VEI supports water companies in developing countries to improve their operational and financial performance in a sustainable way. VEI focuses on central water supply in urban areas. Plan has extensive experience in water and sanitation projects, working with local communities to provide information on the importance of good hygiene and sanitation and with municipalities to prevent water wastage.
Working together on water in Mzuzu
Since 2013, Plan and VEI have worked together in Malawi in a public-private partnership. In Mzuzu, VEI worked with the local drinking water company to map how much water is lost due to leaks and ensures timely repairs. In cooperation with Plan, at least ten new water kiosks are being built to improve access to water in poor neighbourhoods. The project’s aims include halving water losses due to leaks, giving more households access to water supplies, and increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the local water company and municipality.
Long-term partnership
Plan and VEI entered into a long-term partnership in 2014, through which they will jointly set up and implement WASH projects until 2020. “At Vitens Evides International, we regard this partnership as unique, complementary and successful. Successful in our own mission, but more importantly successful in meeting the demands of the beneficiary water companies and consumers.” Marco Schouten, VEI director.
